How To Take Magnesium
Magnesium supplements are most commonly taken orally. It is found in the form of supplement tablets and is sometimes combined with other minerals such as calcium, vitamin D and potassium or in a multivitamin. Magnesium is also available in powder form or drinks. Occasionally, it is used in a mouthwash as a treatment for gingivitis.
Magnesium can also be applied to the skin (transdermally) in the form of magnesium “oil.” (While it’s called an oil, it’s actually a tonic). It is also available as a gel or bath flakes. This method reduces the likelihood of laxative side effects.
In extreme cases of low magnesium, the mineral is adminstered intravenously.
Absorption and side effects vary based on how you take magnesium. Remember, more isn’t better. Any excess magnesium is removed through our kidneys and there is no benefit to exceeding the recommended daily allowance.
