From magnesium-rich foods, to powders to magnesium tablets, there are myriad ways to increase your daily intake of magnesium. The mineral magnesium is essential for countless heart, nerve and muscle functions. In its many forms and compounds, magnesium has been used to treat conditions such as asthma, allergies, chronic fatigue syndrome and more.

For reasons attributed to diet or existing medical conditions, many people do not get ample magnesium from the food they eat. Magnesium oil, applied transdermally (topically) is one of the best absorbed and effective ways to supplement your diet with magnesium.

Magnesium oil is, in fact, not an oil at all. It’s a solution of magnesium chloride, mined from natural sources, and mixed with water. It does have a slightly oily texture.

The primary advantage of magnesium oil is that most people absorb it more efficiently than in a tablet supplement. However, rather than a substitute for an oral supplement, magnesium oil is recommended for use in addition to it. Another distinct advantage of using either magnesium oil or gel is that they do not typically have the same laxative effect as oral magnesium supplements. Treating health conditions transdermally is an ancient practice. It is widely believed that applying substances directly to the skin better saturates the body’s tissues and more effectively penetrates cells. This treatment is also well-suited for treating muscle and joint problems.

Magnesium oxide is used to treat conditions such as heartburn or acid indigestion. It can sometimes function as a laxative where it would be taken for a short period of time. Magnesium oxide can also be a dietary supplement for low magnesium levels, helping to maintain an appropriate amount in the body. Some symptoms of a magnesium deficiency are leg cramps, migraines and fatigue, but a physician can tell you if your magnesium-level is causing those symptoms.

Magnesium oxide is typically taken in tablet form one or more times per day. They are often time-released and are swallowed whole. Given its unpleasant taste, it is sometimes recommended to be taken with fruit juice and during mealtime. Side effects such as upset stomach or diarrhea make increase if taken on an empty stomach. It is also available in liquid form and dosage should be carefully measured.

Taking magnesium oxide may interact with other medications, both over-the-counter and prescriptions, so be sure to consult with your doctor or health care professional beforehand. Medications such as diuretics and antibiotics can sometimes deplete your body’s magnesium levels.

Some of the more well-known magnesium oxide brands are Mag-OX, Maox, Uro-Mag and Magnacaps. Many are free of sugar, gluten, carbohydrates and sodium and don’t interfere with restricted diets. Magnesium oxide may
contain higher amounts of magnesium than other types of magnesium supplements such as magnesium lactate .
